Finding your perfect Winter Coat

Finding your perfect Winter Coat

When it comes to our Autumn Winter wardrobes, it’s no secret that our outerwear takes centre-stage…

…and with that dreaded chill already creeping in, I’ve started to bundle up under my knits and cosy layers, which I won’t be emerging from until Spring.

One of the most important items you will buy this season is your winter coat. It needs to keep you warm and dry on the worst of days, but it also needs to complement your style and blend in seamlessly with the rest of your wardrobe. It’s the first thing a person usually notices about your outfit, so why not make it something special?

After searching high and low for my perfect winter coat, I finally settled on this beautiful tan double-breasted coat from Marks and Spencer’s Autograph range, and I am so impressed with it’s quality and fit. The fabric is a wool cashmere mix, making it not only incredibly warm but also soft to touch, a perfect combination! It’s neutral colour means it will go with nearly everything in my wardrobe, and can be thrown over just about any outfit to look effortlessly chic. With an endless sea of choice out there, you don’t have to splurge on designer brands to find your dream-coat. Brands like Marks and Spencer boast some great quality styles for very affordable prices, and just remember the following basics and you’ll certainly get it right:

Three ingredients for the perfect winter coat:

1: Good Tailoring:

Your perfect winter coat must be well-tailored, and suited to your height and shape. If the fit isn’t right, it’s just not going to look as good on your body. I personally love my coats to be ever so slightly oversized, so I sized up for this one, opting for a uk 10 rather than my usual 8. I always recommend sizing up with coats for the best fit, so you’ll have room for more layers underneath if needed. In my opinion, a coat should never be worn too tight, and a slightly looser fit is perfect for cloaking over the shoulders, a move that I’m not ashamed to say I love doing!

2: Quality Fabrics:

Again, it all comes back to warmth. Some synthetic fabrics are just not as warm, and what’s worse is they wont last the test of time either. Your coat will be exposed to the elements more than any other item in your wardrobe, so if you can spend a little more for a better fabric blend, then I strongly recommend it. Look for wool, tweed, cashmere, suede, or high quality cotton and you’ll thank yourself in the long run.

3: Neutral Colours:

Finally, when it comes to investing in your winter coat, it’s always best to choose a “safe” colour. Blacks, navys, and greys are all very easy to style outfits around, but my personal favourite has always been tan. It’s a classic and stylish colour that always looks chic and put-together, and in the darker winter months it adds a welcome dose of lightness into your outfit. So if you’ve been wary about opting for a tan winter coat before, then why not try it out this season?
