Distressed denim + White tee + boyfriend blazer = Summer Stylin’ Perfection!
This fashion formula is so very simple, yet SO effective for looking put together on those hot summer days that we *hopefully* have ahead of us here in Ireland.
At 26, I often wonder if I should be packing away certain trends that are more suited to those younger gals, but distressed shorts is NOT one of them. Sure, it’s not exactly fashionable to be trotting around in too-short-shorts and a teeny-weeny crop top for Sunday brunch with the family, but you can still rock a pair of distressed denims while looking chic as ever. Here’s how:
1: Find the right fit.
In my humble opinion, the key to nailing this look is to find the right-fitting shorts, in a style that flatters your figure. Ideally, you want to find that sweet spot between them fitting too loose and too tight (a big no-no!) and that don’t pinch your legs or bum anywhere, which can make you look bulkier. If you follow me on Snapchat (add CiaraODoherty) you’ll know how obsessed I was with the fit of these black raw hem distressed denim shorts from River Island, so much so that I had to pick them up in white, too! Unfortunately both the black and white colours are now sold out, but the Ecru shade is still available, not to mention lots of other gorgeous styles that are all €35 and under!

2: Try out a distressed style.
If you think distressed shorts are just for festival-goers, think again. Choosing a slightly distressed style adds and element of edge to your look, but just don’t over-do it! Rips at the front and sides look great, but gaping holes are not so chic, and rips at the bum are equally risky. Unless you’re fine with flashing your knickers, that is.
3: Choose a longer Blazer.
The key to this combo looking effortless and chic is all in the length of the blazer. Boyfriend styles are typically that bit longer, which means they cover your bum and the sides of your legs, and that’s exactly what makes them look so good with shorts. You won’r feel too exposed and they’ll create a nice draping effect which will flatter your legs to boot. It creates an outfit that’s effortlessly chic, but still a little bit sexy and undone. Eh, WIN!

4: Stick to one colour palette.
Mixing up colours in your outfits is always lots of fun especially in the Summer months, but keep it looking fresh by sticking to 2-3 colours in your overall look. Try mixing tans, greys, nudes, whites, and blue denims for a crisp summer ensemble. I choose black shorts for this look but I’m guessing that white or blue denim would look just as cute.

5: Be confident.
The real key to rocking your short shorts in the summertime is confidence, unfortunately, you can buy that in the shops. As humans, we all have lumps, bumps, scars, skin problems, and various other things we’d rather change about ourselves, but it’s so important to embrace the warmer weather and be a little braver with our fashion choices, because soon enough, we’ll all be bundled up in our winter clothes again. I have broken veins, a few scars, and lots of bumpy skin on my legs, but when the warmer weather hits I put my insecurities aside and pull out those shorts. And hey, there’s a lot to be said for a little exfoliation and some self-tanner on top, for helping a gal’s confidence, am I right?!
Love everything about this outfit! It’s perfect <3
